Indian Spicy Herbal Soup – Rasam

This recipe is straight from the Indian kitchen. I believe you will like the aroma and flavor of this soup i.e. rasam.
Indian spicy herbal soup, Rasam

Ingredients:

  • Tamarind – half of the size of lemon
  • Tomato – 1 small size
  • Onion -1 small size
  • Pepper – 3/4 tsp
  • Fennel Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Garlic – 4 cloves
  • Red Chilli – 1
  • Green Chilli – 1
  • Curry Leaves – 2 leaves
  • Toor Dhal – 1 tbsp
  • Water – 4 to 5 cups
  • Finely chopped Coriander leaves – 3 tbsp
  • Salt – 1tsp

Ingredients to grind:

It is enough if you are able to mash all the ingredients so that all of them are half broken. If you are using a blender, better blend cumin seeds, fennel seeds, pepper first (you should only break it), then add the other items.

  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Red Chilli (heat it over fire/ you can heat it in grill) – 1
  • Green Chilli – 1
  • Cumin Seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Fennel Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Pepper – 3/4 tsp
  • Garlic – 4 cloves
  • Onion – take half of the chopped onion
  • Curry leaves – 2 leaves

Below is the picture of the ground mixture.

  1. Take the extract from tamarind by soaking it in water for 2-3 minutes. Remove the waste or junk from it. Add chopped tomato to it. Make sure that this mixture comes to about 5 cups. Keep it aside.
  2. Heat oil in a vessel.
  3. Add Toor dhal and fry till it turns light brown in colour.
  4. Add mustard and urad dhal mixture and wait till mustard splits.
  5. Add the remaining onion and fry till it turns golden brown.
  6. Add the ground masala and fry till the raw smell goes and no moisture is present in the masala. The masala color will also turn light brown.
  7. Now add the tamarind mixture.
  8. When you see bubbles coming up in the sides of the vessel add salt and the chopped coriander leaves.

The aroma coming from this traditional Indian Soup (Rasam) will fill your house. My mom suggests having this soup when having cold or when you feel exhausted. This is rejuvenating! Try this.
